Peter James and Michael McGuirk have been playing together for the past three years, performing at clubs and pubs in the Hunter, Port Stephens and up and down the coast.

They were also among the local stars at the Lost Highway Bluegrass Festival in May.

“We often do free shows for local community and fundraising events,” Peter James said.

But it’s their Busking at the Blue Water Country Music Festival in Nelson Bay that’s paid big dividends for Peter and Michael.

They busked and sang and strummed in the rain for the four days of the festival

“To our surprise we received the Award for Best Duo and we were also booked to perform at the Toyota Showcase Marque which gives us a chance at going to next year’s Country Music Festival in Tamworth,” Peter said.

The Nelson Bay Music Festival has been going since 2006 and this year an estimated 20,000 people tuned in over the long weekend.

“There was some great talent in the Nelson Bay area with free performances, and it was a great weekend despite the poor weather.”

“The best part was meeting up with other musicians that we haven’t seen for years who travelled from the Central Coast and Hunter Valley.”

PJ and STIX’s next gig is at the Botanical Gardens in Heatherbrae on Tuesday 4 July.
