SAWTELL entrepreneur and young business owner Vayda Maher has been repurposing dead stock inventory that doesn’t turn over, into stock with new life.

Vayda grew up in Bellingen and is living and working in Sawtell on her business VayKay Swim.

I spoke with Ms Maher about the inspiration to use dead stock for her limited edition swimwear.

“I liked the idea of starting my own company and didn’t want to bulk buy stuff that might not sell so I stumbled across dead stock and thought it would be uniquely made and is all limited.”

Ms Maher started researching during COVID to find warehouses and online suppliers that sell deadstock fabric.
She then designs and sews them into swimmers that are completely reversible.

“With businesses that don’t use inventory management software, deadstock can remain on warehouse shelves forgotten and useless.

“My goal is to utilise the deadstock into limited run, swimwear making the best use out of all the over supply of fabrics.

“I hope to create a swimwear business that has a whole lot of heart but only a little footprint.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to start my own swimwear label but I’ve always looked down on mass production and wanted to create pieces that are unique and in the hopes people will cherish forever,” she said.

What it means for the buyer is they get a unique swimming costume that is from a limited range that may only consist of between two to ten pieces available ever.

Made with Love markets Founder Alison Paul said the use of deadstock is unique.

“I had never heard of it before, said Ms Paul.

“I welcome such an amazing product to join the other market holders this Sunday.”

Catch the swimwear range and other local crafters at the Park Beach Plaza carpark on Sunday 28.
