Diggers Win as Young Guns Shine

Diggers captain Jonathon Paff was all smiles as the reigning Division One Premiers won their opening match.

REIGNING Division One premiers Diggers Cricket Club chalked up a convincing victory in their opening match of the 2022 season.

After losing the toss and sent to field, a ferocious Diggers bowling attack made short work of the Valleys top order dismissing the visitors for 74 runs.

It was a captain’s performance from Jonathon Paff who took three wickets for a meagre seven runs.

Ty Adams took three wickets for seven runs and fourteen year old Jacob Cross impressed on his first division debut with two wickets for six runs.

The Diggers raced to a winning total of 75 runs after 13 overs with debutant Kieren Cunningham impressing with the bat finishing as top scorer with 28 runs from 24 balls.

Diggers captain Jonathan Paff was brimming with delight following a dominant team performance and successful debuts from the young guns.

“Really happy with how we played, a little bit of rust with 22 sundries but was really happy with how young Jacob Cross bowled, Ty and I both got three wickets which was good.

“(In terms of) batting it was good to see Kieren Cunningham get runs in his call up to first grade he could be key for us,” said Jonathon.

Diggers Secretary Greg Swan told News Of The Area, “After losing the toss and being sent to field it was a strong start for Diggers with the ball, Ty Adam’s taking 3/7 of his four overs, the captain Jonathon Paff taking 3/7 off his three overs and young Jacob Cross getting two wickets at just 14 years of age.

“Chasing 75 to win the runs came quickly with Kirean Cunningham scoring 28 off just 24 deliveries.

“Valleys have a very young side which will certainly improve with more game time,” said Greg.

The Diggers’ next match is against Sawtell on Saturday 13 November at Fitzroy Oval with a 12:30pm start.
