DOLPHINS make the Myall Coast and indeed all of Port Stephens and Mid Coast Great Lakes region a very special place.

It is rare not to see them somewhere in the river, ocean or port, whether you are strolling along the the waterfront, walking along the amazing beaches within the region or even crossing the Tea Gardens Singing Bridge.

Adrienne Ingram from the Myall Koala and Environment Group said, “There are more than 100 dolphins in the Port Stephens catchment area, though like humans, the numbers change as visiting dolphins come and go.”

“Volunteers with this year’s Port Stephens Dolphin Census sighted 86 in one hour on a wet and windy winter’s day, and Lisa Skelton from Marine Parks Association says another study has observed 251 individuals over a two-year period,” Ms Ingram said.

“Maybe our fascination has something to do with the way dolphins inhabit the margin between their water and our air.”

Dolphins need to surface to breathe every 30 seconds to 30 minutes, so we glimpse them glistening and they disappear, over and over again.

Ms Ingram said the Environment Group are doing many great things to help protect and preserve the precious wildlife around our region.

“Drop your 5-cent coins into the Koala Jar at the Holiday Coast Credit Union, Myall Quays shopping centre, Tea Gardens,” Ms Ingram said.
