News Of The Area was given the privilege recently of interviewing Dr Stewart on the occasion of his latest award, a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

“It’s a record for the family to appreciate for all the help they’ve given me,” Dr Stewart said.

To call the honour the icing on the cake of a life well lived, would be an understatement.

His love of country, love of family, passion for learning, sport and community have played out his entire life.

Allan Stewart lived through the Great Depression, studied dentistry at Sydney University, graduated with honours and was offered a scholarship to further his studies at the North Western University of Chicago.

He went on to receive a doctorate.

He served his country in World War II.

He married and had six children.

All through the years, there was a love of sport, especially cricket.

He played for the 1st Eleven for Australia House in England as the opening batsman and was given the honour of wearing the ‘Baggy Green Cap’.

Throughout his life though, Allan never stopped learning or giving to his community.

Allan volunteered his services to Meals on Wheels in Tea Gardens for a decade and was a rostered driver to take people to medical appointments.

Not done with his studies, he enrolled in a law degree in 2001.

In 2006 Allan became the world’s oldest Graduate.

His penchant for learning continued and yet another degree followed in 2010, Allan obtaining a Masters of Clinical Science (Complementary Medicine).

At the age of 95, he broke his own world record.

His daughter Anne approached three of his University Professors to be his referees for the OAM; they didn’t hesitate.

One of Allan’s sons likes to joke that his father now has so many letters after his name that the OAM slips off the page.

A humble Dr Stewart simply stated, “I’ve had a very fortunate life.”
