Drumming up School Holiday Fun at the Macksville Library

Mateo and Sofia Perovic from Nambucca Heads at the Drumming Workshop held at the Macksville Library.

YOUNG people enjoying their school holidays in the Nambucca Valley had an opportunity to do something a little different this week when the Macksville Library hosted a free Drumming Workshop.

Enabled by a grant under the NSW Government Holiday Break Program the Macksville Library enlisted the assistance of Nambucca Heads based master drummer Kaya Boom to give youth a group experience in playing hand drums.

Manager of the Macksville Library, Mr Wes McQuillan, told News Of The Area, “We wanted to show that libraries are more than just books and craft, and drums are something everyone can do.”

Mr McQuillian’s comments were supported by Kaya who added, “Hand Drums are a musical instrument accessible to everybody and kids seem to feel the spirit of music when playing them.”

Kaya has over a decade of experience leading drumming workshops in the Nambucca Valley and surrounding districts and was able to explain and break down rhythms for the group.

Drums from all over the world were used during the workshop and each drum gave off a different sound when played.

The workshop was very well attended with participants sounding like they were seasoned performers by the time the session finished.

From the smiles on the faces of mums, dads and kids during the session it is easy to see why Kaya’s workshops are now regular events at Nambucca Heads, Bellingen, South West Rocks and Sawtell.

The free holiday fun continues at the Macksville Library when they present The Wildlife Twins Wildlife Show on 5 October.
