RFS Mid Coast Group Captain Phil Hughes said, “The existing captain is retiring he’s been in the brigade for over 40 years. The brigades been going for over 60 years I’ve been told and this is the worst start to a fire season on record.”

The agenda circulated by acting secretary Terry Brown stressed to members:

The purpose of this meeting is to decide what happens to the Brigade from here on in.

If the Brigade is to continue as an entity, it will need to elect: A Captain, at least one Deputy Captain, a President, a Secretary, a Treasurer, Members of the Committee and Permit Officer, some of the above positions can be combined.

If these aforementioned positions can’t be filled, then the choice is to join with another brigade or close the Brigade all together. The Brigade has to vote on either of these options. It would be a shame to see it fold, but we’ve done all we can now it’s up to other people to take up the challenge.

“It’s hoped we can secure a full crew at Girvan station, they have always been available in the past, whenever I call them,” said Phil.

If you live local to Girvan and can volunteer to help save the Girvan Rural Fire Brigade attend the meeting at 9 Nugra Lane or contact Terry Brown, bereturn74@bigpond.com.
