Donning academic gowns and mortarboards for the formal occasion, the graduates were all smiles as they celebrated the milestone achievement in their educational journeys.

Mitchell Blanch, who proudly collected a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with Class II Division 1 Honours, said all the hard work had paid off.

“After five long years I can finally say I’m an engineer,” he said.

“I am now working in project management, maintaining power stations and chemical plants throughout Australia.”

Completing their degrees through the Faculty of Education and Arts, Hayley Follett and Casey Gooch were each awarded a Bachelor of Teaching in Early Childhood and Primary with Honours.

Brittany Dorney, who collected a Bachelor of Business, and Daniel Sahyoun who received his Bachelor of Communication with Distinction, were also amongst the university’s newest graduates.

With one degree now under their belts, Brittany and Daniel are both continuing with their studies this year.

Brittany said she has 18 months of hard work ahead to complete the Bachelor of Law she studied concurrently with her business degree.

“I would like to practice in commercial law,” she said.

“I really enjoyed studying the courses for the business degree, so commercial practice will be a great avenue to use knowledge of both business operations and the law.”

University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Caroline McMillen, said graduation was an opportunity to pay tribute to the remarkable achievement of the graduates and reflect on years of hard work and commitment.
