Blueberries have a wonderful combination of tastiness and nutritional benefits.

They are low in calories and have a high antioxidant content, enabling them to scavenge radicals that might otherwise damage the body.

Here in Port Stephens we have our very own Organic Blueberry Farm at Bobs Farm Berries, just past Murray’s Brewery.

David and Tracey Pass have lived in Port Stephens for more than 29 years and on their Bobs Farm property for the last 16 years.

David, a qualified local builder, and Tracey, a midwife at Maitland Hospital, have three adult children, Jennifer, Jonathan and Jessie.

Both David and Tracey decided to begin farming Blueberries after they heard a roadside blueberry farmer tell them that even though he sold his produce to the locals he would never let his children eat them.

The comment motivated the Pass family to grow blueberries that were completely chemical-free for their own consumption and, in turn, others.

They found that the position of their farm in the sandhills of Bobs Farm gave them the ideal conditions for the blueberries.

“Sandy soil is great as it is free draining; we have plenty of groundwater and the temperature is perfect,” David Pass told Bay News Of The Area.

Bobs Farms Berries have lots of regular customers and when they go on holidays the tourist population take their place.

All the berries are picked fresh and only the ripest are picked.

What is in the fridge to sell is no more than three days old, so that means a greater shelf life in your fridge at home.

Mr Pass guarantees “Fresh from the Bush to your hand in three days”.

“There is no need to wash the blueberries as they are picked with a lot of love and with the cleanest of hands,” Mr Pass told Bay News Of The Area.

“This year has been a dry year which has been good for picking the berries and just enough rain to fatten the berries up,” he said.

During the Christmas and New Year period it is not unusual for the Berry Farm to turn over 80-100 kilograms of Blueberries per week.

Opening hours are Wednesdays 9 – 1pm and Friday afternoon from 2- 6pm unless they sell out early.
