Jet Ski collides with boat at Nerong and kills woman

A woman has died and a child has been injured after a crash between a boat and jet ski at Nerong,  near Bulahdelah.

About 5.30pm yesterday (Friday 7 October 2016), a boat and a jet ski collided on the Nerong Inlet at Nerong, south of Forster.

A 54-year-old woman, who was on the jet-ski died at the scene.

An eight-year-old boy, who was also on the jet ski, was airlifted from the scene and taken to John Hunter Hospital. He is to undergo surgery for a broken leg.

The skipper of the boat, a 46-year-old man sustained a broken nose and ribs in the crash. He was also airlifted to John Hunter Hospital. A 20-year-old man, who was also on board the boat, was uninjured.

A child on board the boat was uninjured.

Specialist marine investigations from the Marine Area Command are working with detectives from Manning/Great Lakes Local Area Command to investigate the crash.

Marine Area Command’s Superintendent Mark Hutchings said it was the early stages of a complex investigation.

“We are mindful of the tragedy that has befallen everyone involved and what sort of affect last night’s events would have had.

“The boat has been taken to a secure location for forensic examination. Specialist marine investigators have been sent to the area to work with local detectives so a report can be prepared for the Coroner,” Superintendent Hutchings said.

A woman has died and a child has been injured after a crash between a boat and jet ski at Nerong near Bulahdelah, on the Mid North Coast.

About 5.30pm yesterday (Friday 7 October 2016), a boat and a jet ski collided on the Nerong Inlet at Nerong.

An adult female who was on the jet ski died at the scene. Her age is not yet known.

An eight-year-old boy, who was also on the jet ski, received spinal injuries.
He was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital for treatment. He is in a stable condition.

The skipper of the boat, a male aged 46, was also airlifted to John Hunter Hospital. His injuries are not known at this stage, but they are not believed to be life threatening.

A child on board the boat was uninjured.

Detectives from Manning/Great Lakes Local Area Command have commenced an investigation into the incident.

The Marine Area Command will take over the investigation in due course.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
