IT’S not equal to being one of the “Australians of the Year”.

It’s not as good as receiving a “New Year Honour”, nor as good as being elected to a “Sporting Hall of Fame”. But. Eight members of Karuah RSL Bowls Club this last weekend vied for an “immortality” almost as good by competing in the final of the club fours 2018 Club Championship.

Victory would mean a whole year as champions, as well as having their names painted up on the wall on the club’s honour boards forevermore.

The contenders were the defending champions, Gordon Latimore’s team of John French, Sam Rees, and Peter Dennis, tried and true, attempting to win the comp for the 3rd year in a row.

The challengers were Greg Pearson’s team of Dennis Ashbridge, Leigh Hunter and John Bilby, newer club members attempting to cement their reputations. What a day, what a competition.

A large and knowledgeable crowd gathered on the verandah at the RSL Club Sunday afternoon with the best vantage points taken early.

A hush of expectation descended as the umpire tossed the coin and this almost immediately changed to applause as the very high standard bowling got under way.

This final was the game the whole club had all been waiting for!

After a very tight first 6 ends both teams were dead even, then after 2 big ends and some very tight others Gordon’s team drew well ahead to lead 14 – 6 after 11 ends.

But hold on to your hats. Absurdly skilled bowling by players in all 4/8 positions saw a comeback to 14 – 12 after 15 ends and then 16 – 14 after 17 ends!

Absolutely unbelievable bowling saw the jack moved 3 or 4 times every end with the holder of shot changing almost as much. Last end Gordon’s side held the lead by 3 but Greg’s side fought back to be in a position to get 4 before Gordon finally dashed their hopes by picking up the jack with a precision bowl that took the jack and competition away!

What a game – played in the absolute best spirit in front of an appreciative verandah of spectators astounded by the skills on display! Well done to Greg, Dennis, Leigh and John, a great display of team bowling.

Congratulations to Gordon, John, Sam and Pete.

You have proved that 3 in a row is possible if your good enough. Well done Karuah RSL Bowls Club, the future of both home grown bowlers and those bowlers who choose to come and join our great club looks very bright!
