Nominations are open for the 2018 Port Stephens Grandparent of the Year and the winning recipient will be announced as part of Grandparents Day on Sunday 28 October.

Port Stephens is the chosen home to many senior residents and grandparents, including the 2016 Census’s oldest suburb in the country – Tea Gardens.

Port Stephens’ residents have until Friday 17 August to nominate a local grandparent who supports young people through voluntary work or other special contribution. Nominations can be made to Kate Washington’s office by emailing portstephens@parliament.nsw.gov.au or calling 4987 4455.

Extra special grandparents can also be nominated for the statewide NSW Grandparent of the year award.

Nominations for the statewide award can be made here: https://www.grandparentsday.nsw.gov.au/awards

Local grandkids can get in on the action by taking part in the 2018 Grandparents Day Photography Competition.

School age grandchild can submit their photo with the theme ‘intergenerational’ to go into the competition to win a Microsoft Surface Pro tablet. More information about the competition can be found here:

Ms Washington said, “The 2018 Grandparent of the Year awards are an important opportunity to recognise the incredible contribution of local grandparents. So many of our older residents give back to our community by helping the next generation fulfil their potential. ”

“Nominations can include older people who volunteer to support local children, even if they aren’t their grandchildren.

Many amazing volunteers become the grandparent figure for local kids,” she said.
