After weeks of keeping watch, the endangered Little Terns have started laying dozens of eggs.

“Great news, the Little Terns have started laying on the dredge pile at Winda Woppa,” Jill Madden told News Of The Area.

The first nests were located a couple of weeks ago, just four scrapes in the sand, each with one egg.

Jill Madden is over the moon because locals have now counted 48 eggs.

“The Winda Woppa dredge pile of sand is an ideal site for them to nest but also very open to disturbance from people and dogs.”

Last year local birdwatcher Neil Fraser documented 28 fledglings being raised.

“This is a great result which really relies on beach goers and dog walkers being careful and vigilant,” Council’s Drew Morris said.

With that in mind Midcoast Council and residents are appealing to all locals and visitors to be very wary where they tread and where they’re dogs like to play.

“Some signage and pickets have been erected to alert locals and visitors to the area in question so please stay clear of the nesting area for the next three months,” Jill said.

A roster of locals will be monitoring the nests to see how many chicks of this endangered species survive to adulthood.

Jill added, “Give them a wave if you see them and encourage visitors to keep their dogs and children away from the hatching area.”
