A man has been rescued after he fell down a cliff north of Blackheath in the Blue Mountains yesterday.

About 4.15pm on Tuesday 23 September 2014, a group of bushwalkers were walking in Grand Canyon, near Evans Lookout, north of Blackheath, when they heard cries for help.

Emergency services were contacted and responded.

Over 65 personnel have attended the location, including officers from the Blue Mountains Local Area Command, Rural Fire Service, Ambulance Paramedics, Special Operations Team and the Special Casualty Access Team.

After a few hours, officers located a 41year-old man approximately 10 metres down the side of the cliff, in a serious condition.

During the rescue operation, the man was moved in a two stage haul to the bottom of the cliff and carried to an extraction point.

About midnight, the same day, the man was winched by a helicopter and taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment, where he is in a serious but stable condition.
