Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull contacted Dr Gillespie to invite him to again be part of the Ministry as the new Assistant Minister for Children and Families, as part of new ministerial arrangements announced today.

Dr Gillespie said he thoroughly enjoyed working in the Health portfolio as Australia’s Assistant Health Minister, and looked forward to the challenge of new ministerial responsibilities.

“Over the past year and half, I have very much enjoyed working with the various health stakeholders and my department in developing new policies to address the maldistribution of Australia’s health workforce. Some of those policies are now at the implementation stage, and others, are being developed in the context of a broader health workforce strategy,” Dr Gillespie said.

“The creation of 26 new regional training hubs, three additional University Departments of Rural Health, the expansion of rural doctor training initiatives, expansion of important regional and rural health initiatives including the dental service now being delivered by the Royal Flying Doctor Service, regional health outreach services like the Heart of Australia Truck and my appointment of Australia’s First Rural Health Commissioner are all significant highlights.”

“As the Minister with responsibility for Food Regulation and Health Safety, I was pleased to work with industry and public health stakeholders through the Health Food Partnership to expand and improve the Health Star Rating initiative, and improve the health content of packaged foods through reformulation and portion control.”

“Reforms and new initiatives in the National Industrial Chemicals Notification Scheme, Office of the Gene Technology Regulator, the National Blood Authority and the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency have also been an important part of my former role.”

“I would also like to extend my appreciation and gratitude to Health Ministers Sussan Ley and Greg Hunt. Minister Hunt is an outstanding minister doing a great job in the Health portfolio. It’s been a great pleasure assisting him as we continue to implement wide-ranging reforms to improve Australia’s world-class health system to make it sustainable well into the future.”

“As the Minister now responsible for Children and Families within the Social Services portfolio headed up by the newly appointed Cabinet Minister Dan Tehan, I am enthusiastic about tackling some of the challenges that we have ahead of us.

“It’s a broad policy area that will require many partnerships with key stakeholders in order to improve the social framework for our children, families and local communities.”
