“Laurie Vickery, a well known local identity is recognised as the founding member of the Mullets and is now known as ‘Head Mullet”, Chris Mobbs, Captain of the Myall Masters Swimming Association told News Of The Area.

The Mullets’ are a dedicated lot, you’ll find them most early mornings ploughing through the waters off Jimmys Beach.
They’ve also been given the chance to host an Open Water Swim on Sunday 29 October through their association with the Masters Swimming.

“The State Branch of Masters Swimming is promoting Masters Swimming in the Hunter Region and Myall,” Chris said.

“This is the Inaugural Jimmys Beach swim for us and we are hoping it may develop into an annual event, letting visitors in on the secret of our spectacular waterways and help boost the area’s tourism demand.”

Entry to the event is free but you have to be over 18 years of age.

Chris added, “We are capping entries at 50 for the 600 metre and 50 for the 1300 metre and expect some swimmers may do both distances.”

‘’The course is fine to swim in any stage of the tides and the event will go ahead rain, hail or shine with the exception of storms disturbing the normally excellent visibility, or uninvited marine creatures of the bitey kind.”

“Dolphins, turtles, flathead and other fish are welcome and are often there with us,” Chris said.

The Myall Masters will have a stall at the Myall River Festival on Saturday 28 October.
