MYALL Masters member and former President, Peter Kellaway recently returned from the World Masters Games in Auckland carrying some extra baggage in the form of two hefty medals: a silver for the 100 freestyle and a bronze for the 200 freestyle.
A fifth placing in the 50 freestyle topped off a great Games for our Peter who had a late start to his training build up due to a triple bypass operation in August and a trip to the UK over Christmas to visit family. Well done Peter!
Over 2000 swimmers from countries all over the world took part and Peter said the atmosphere in the world class venue with big screen displays, electronic timing and the experience of lining up with swimmers from countries like Russia, United States, Japan, Switzerland, Indonesia, Canada, Italy and South Africa was an experience to remember.
On the local scene, Myall Masters members, Liz McKay and Chris Mobbs, along with former member Col Bertram, travelled up to Pacific Palms on Easter Sunday to take part in the annual Rock to Rock Ocean swim at Elizabeth Beach.
Conditions outside the break were superb but there was a healthy shore dump to negotiate on the return to the beach
Two hundred and forty eight swimmers lined up for the 600 metre and 1.5 km swim with the more energetic taking on both distances.
Col achieved second place in his category in the 600m and Liz swam exceptionally well just missing out on third place in her category by .02 of a second in the 1.5km Chris came in 15th in the 1.5km.
Some amazing times were recorded by some of the younger local lifesavers and their fitness and ability were to be admired.
Masters Swimming NSW support Ocean Swimming and it is another way for us to enjoy our sport.
