JUNIOR Hockey players in Nelson Bay are trained by former Olympian Kate Jenner.

 

Once a fortnight the hockey players of all ages descend on the sports fields at Salamander Bay and engage in training sessions with Kate Jenner who represented Australia at the Olympics in 2012.

The training sessions include basic skills and building the players up to be their best.

Kate Jenner told News Of The Area that she is motivated to work with young people to improve their skills because they are the future of the sport.

“I started playing hockey at around eight years old and was proud to represent Australia at the Olympics in 2012; I have now moved on to coaching throughout the Hunter, Central Coast, Cessnock and Port Stephens regions,” said Ms Jenner.

Hockey gives you a second family, you are surrounded by a group of people that all keep an eye out for you,” she said.

While Kate doesn’t train individual teams as such, sometimes different areas that she coaches face off against each other.

Hockey is a sport for everyone and the Salamander Fields host locals aged from eight to 65 years old.

All the teams are mixed and there are social games for adults too, anyone can give hockey a go.
