The service assists patients by taking them to hospital for treatments as well as the costs associated with changes in daily life. In May alone, sixty-five drives were made from the peninsula to hospitals in Newcastle, Maitland and Lake Macquarie for ladies to receive treatment and to attend medical appointments. In addition, the service arranges free of charge house cleaning, lawn mowing, child minding, counselling and any other practical assistance possible after major surgery. Sri Malaysia Restaurant in Nelson Bay was abuzz with fifty appreciative diners tucking into a gourmet Malaysian buffet last Sunday night. Taurie Lalor, president of the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group, told News Of The Area, “Without the support of the community, we would be unable to provide the services which we do to ladies undergoing treatment for breast cancer.” “We believe that ladies have enough to face without having to drive back from appointments which often leave them ill and drained, so we provide volunteer drivers for them.” “It’s often small things which can make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families, if we can help by overcoming small hurdles it makes it easier for them to focus on getting well again,” she said. The fundraiser for the Tomaree Breast Cancer Support Group was hosted at Sri Malaysia Restaurant by proprietor Jade Ong and her husband, chef extraordinaire who donated all the food and their services.
