With momentum growing for Australia’s day of nationhood celebration to change, the public holiday has become increasingly controversial in recent years.

However, the fact remains that it is a gazetted public holiday that in many ways marks the end of the Australian summer, with students going back to school in the week following Australia Day.

Port Stephens Council has many events organised in key spots to suit a wide range of interests this Australia Day, 26 January 2017.

The centres of Nelson Bay, Karuah, Raymond Terrace, and Lemon Tree Passage will also be hosting free events for the community.

Starting at 8am, Riverside Park at Raymond Terrace has a free breakfast followed by the Australia Day Civic Ceremony.

A RAAF flyover will also feature at Riverside Park.

Meanwhile at Henderson Park, Lemon Tree Passage, a free barbecue breakfast, activities, live music and other entertainment including the Australian Army Band will feature at the family friendly event.

The Karuah RSL Club will once again organise and host an event which includes cooking competitions, an auction of local produce, a thong throwing competition, bowls and live music.

All money raised is donated to the Rural Fire Brigades of Karuah, North Arm Cove and Limeburners Rural Fire Brigades.

Feature events will be at Fly Point, Nelson Bay.

Commencing with a street parade from 9am on Laman Street, Nelson Bay and concluding at the Rotary Park, Fly Point there will exciting activities for all to enjoy including the Hunter School of Performing Arts Marching Band.

Formalities will kick off with a Welcome To Country at 1pm followed by the announcement of the Port Stephens Council Community Awards recipients, an address by the Port Stephens Australia Day Ambassador, Citizenship Ceremony, Affirmation and National Anthem.

This is the premier event for Port Stephens with markets, a RAAF fly past, vintage and classic car display, sheep shearing demonstration, and many more free family friendly activities available throughout the day.
