THE South Tomaree Community Association has achieved plenty since its inception.

The group, formed in 2015, was successful in saving 23 hectares of bushland between Anna Bay and Fishermans Bay that was to be developed by Urban Growth.

Roz Scoles, Vice President of South Tomaree Community Association told News Of The Area, “We are passionate about our beautiful area and want to see it grow in a positive and sustainable way; we are not against development but feel any developments need to take the local flora and fauna into account.”

“We are currently working on a few different projects, including the completion of the cycleway between Clark Street and Boat Harbour for the safety of children riding between Anna Bay Public School and their homes; and a cycleway from James Patterson Street to Nelson Bay Road as this is a very busy and dangerous place to walk.”

“The association is also concerned about the consultation in place regarding the Birubi Point Aboriginal Place Management Plan, Master Plan,” she said.

Steve Bernasconi of Port Stephens Council told News Of The Area, “There will be a drop-in session at Birubi Surf Life Saving Club on Saturday 12 August from 10-2pm where members of the community can drop in, meet people, ask questions and learn about Aboriginal culture.”

“Written submissions on the plan will be accepted via Council’s website,” he said.

The Association would like to hear from the wider community on these and other projects that need to be worked on. They are encouraging people to visit the Facebook page and engage with the group.

The committee believes that now is the time for action, and are encouraging locals to get behind the association’s work to create better spaces in and around Anna Bay.
