Rotary Salamander Bay had been made aware that Soldiers Point Public School had lost many trees due to storms and tree risk/safety assessments over the years; the result being that many of koala feeding trees were gone.

They saw this challenge as a great opportunity to arrange the planting of koala friendly trees at the school and coincide it with ‘Schools Tree Day’, held on Friday 27 July.

With a generous donation of trees from Port Stephens Council, a group of children were assigned to their trees and they will now be responsible for watering them and watching them grow.

Soldiers Point Public School is known for sharing their playground with the koalas. The children monitor their whereabouts, helping to keep track on numbers. Port Stephens Koalas also appreciate being able to release their koalas from care into their safe playground.

With such a huge decline of koalas in the area, they hope to encourage more back to where they don’t have to worry about losing their homes or avoiding the neighbourhood dogs.

We need to ensure that future generations will get to have recess and lunch with the koalas too.
