The medals are an initiative of Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead to acknowledge the potential of the next generation of leaders.

“It’s about recognising that they are leaders and encouraging that leadership as they continue their education and then go out into the workforce,” Mr Bromhead said.

“At the same time, it is a message to all the students that they too can become leaders by getting involved in things, as it is through these life experiences that you become a good leader.”

Ellie and Jordan are both members of the Student Representative Council, and have assisted with organising a disco, keeping the school grounds clean and chairing assemblies.

Principal Mrs Joanne Trotter said a shared reading program with the younger students, peer support activities and tending to the school’s chickens are also amongst their many leadership roles.

“It’s not just the glory of the badge, there are responsibilities that come with the position,” she said.

“They have a voice within school and the younger ones can see that it is great to be a leader and have that goal of also getting involved.”

Mr Bromhead told News Of The Area he meets with all school captains in the electorate throughout the year.

“It’s great to see all these students put their hand up and take on important roles within their school,” he said.

“It is important to support our future leaders and give them the backing they need to flourish.”
