LATE night drizzling rain and an 8mm downpour the following morning effectively blacked out the bushfire which consumed some 37 hectares of scrub behind Tanilba Shores retirement village on Friday 4th October.

Some 12 Rural Fire Service (RFS) and Fire & Rescue units attended the out-of-control blaze which was fanned by a stiff southerly wind.
Arsonists or a torched car are believed to be the cause of the fire at an early stage of investigation.
The retirement village and local homes were not under threat from the fire-front but an emergency classification warning advised affected residents to ‘activate their survival plans’.
This warning was later downgraded after the fire was contained.
A wide, slashed firebreak around the village protected the complex but the firies were worried that blazing candlebark and live embers could shower down on the village and nearby homes setting alight leaf litter in the guttering and getting into the roof cavities.
Their constant patrols of adjoining buildings ensured that this did not happen.
Morning perimeter patrols had little ‘black out’ work to do as the steady rainfall did the job for them.
