WORK to implement road safety improvements on the Pacific Highway at Nerong will begin today as a part of the Federal Coalition Government’s Black Spot Programme.

Dr Gillespie said the Australian Government provided $200,000 for the project to improve safety for motorists and reduce off road crashes.

“In the five years to June 2013 there were 10 crashes which resulted in six injuries on the Pacific Highway from Viney Creek Road West to 540 metres north,” Dr Gillespie said.

“Safety improvement work involves installing Install kerbside safety barrier northbound from Viney Creek Road West to 500m north and southbound from Viney Creek Road East to 200 north’.

“This funding is on top of the $5.64 billion investment the Federal Coalition Government is making to duplicate the Pacific Highway.”

“We know that investment in road infrastructure can save lives,” said Dr Gillespie.

NSW Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter & Central Coast Scot MacDonald thanked local motorists for their patience while the safety improvement work is carried out by Roads and Maritime Services.

“The new barriers aim to reduce the severity of crashes in the area by preventing motorists from veering off the road.”
