IN today’s world, it is easy to forget the power of kindness, but doing something as simple as saying thank you can bring a smile to many faces.

Bulahdelah Central School Year 12 students put this theory to the test last week, by acknowledging some of the many people who contribute to the community.

Armed with baskets filled with freshly baked muffins, the students hit the streets during their recess and lunchtime to deliver the treats, which had a note attached simply saying, “Thank you for being part of our community”.

The surprise visits brought instantaneous smiles, which quickly spread throughout the town.

“This has made my day,” one community member said.

“Wow, such a lovely thing to do,” another stated.

Year 12 student, Kaitlyn Smart, said she enjoyed being involved, as kindness is an essential part of small communities.

“If you can put a smile on somebody’s face by performing an act of kindness, that smile is going to be contagious,” she said.

“It feels good knowing that you can brighten someone’s day by doing something so simple.”

The muffins were baked by Year 12 Hospitality students, who arrived very early to prepare hundreds of the sweet treats ready for delivery.

Year 12 Advisor, Ms Wendy Parsons, said due to Year 12’s HSC study commitments, they were unable to visit every deserving community member on this occasion.

“The students have plans to continue their random acts during their final school term, and the kindness is bound to spread a little further each time,” she said.

The delivery of the muffins was the third act of kindness performed by the Year 12 students.

As one community member stated, “An act of kindness, no matter how small, is never wasted”.
