In the MidCoast region, 90 Legacy volunteers, known as Legatees, currently work to assist 590 widows and their families.

Bulahdelah Legatee, Irene Worth, is encouraging people to dig deep.

“This is Legacy’s only fundraising event for the year, but the funds help provide support for widows and their children throughout the entire year,” she said.

“It is important because there are wives and children left at home that need to be looked after.”

Irene said as a Legatee, she is responsible for providing assistance, care and support to five widows in the local area.

Students from Bulahdelah Central School will be assisting at Legacy stalls in Stroud Street and the BP Service Station this Friday.

For 75 years, badges have been offered as a token of appreciation for donations made by the public.

Irene said the volunteers will also be selling pens, bracelets and teddy bears with all proceeds going towards assisting the families of veterans.

“For every serving Australian who risks everything for their country, a family does the same,” she said.

“If anything happens, Legacy will always be there to step in.”

The 2017 Legacy Week appeal runs from 27 August – 2 September.
