Those six words, from local Anne Rutter, summed up the mood at last weekend’s Grey and Thespian Mardi Gras in Hawks Nest.

Anne and Sonja Ridden certainly turned heads with their colourful costumes at Saturday’s free community event in the Mall on Yamba Street.

“There’s still a bit of misconception about what it is,” Sonja said.

What it was, for the second year running, was a great success.

The three day event had something for everyone and catered to all ages.

After a few early morning showers on Friday, the sun shone down on the 84 golfers who had a great day out on the links in the Grey Nomads Cup.

Friday night was movie night and the classic African Queen was washed down with wine tasting and fish and chips.

Then Saturday dawned bright and sunny, perfect weather for the free street entertainment.

There were lots of community stalls and plenty to keep the crowds enthralled from pipe and drums to rock’n’roll, ukulele players and line dancers.

Some spectators said they came for just a little while and ended up staying for hours.

Saturday night was a sell out with more than 150 people enjoying the dinner dance at the Hawks Nest Golf Club.

Sunday, ‘Finding Dory’ and the ‘Baby Boomers Show’ certainly were a blast from the past and a huge hit.

The Grey and Thespian Committee was thrilled with the overall turnout, testament to their months of hard work behind the scenes to ensure the Mardi Gras will become a permanent feature on the Hawks Nest Entertainment Calendar.
