DURING the stillness last Sunday evening 31 July, a beautiful old fig tree that was planted in the 1970s in Tuncurry’s John Wright Park dropped a large limb.

MidCoast Council’s Tree Management Officer inspected the tree this week and the news was bad.

“Unfortunately the limb was a ‘main leader’ which means that the fig tree was left structurally unsound” said Council’s Manager of Parks and Recreation, Mr Andrew Staniland.

“The remaining ‘leaders’ already showed early signs of the same damage that caused the first limb to fall and so we have been forced to remove the fig tree for safety reasons” said Mr Staniland.

Despite Council conducting tree inspections in parks across the region, sometimes damage is unexpected.

“We’re always sorry to lose a big shade tree in our parks, so we have ordered a replacement fig tree of the same species to replant in the Park” added Mr Staniland.

We can all now look forward to watching a new fig tree grow in one of our iconic locations.
