It officially began at the Brown Sea Island Camp on 1 August, 1907.

The man who created Scouts, Robert Baden-Powell, strove for a boys’ association that prepared them for life.

The Scouts is popular in Australia, including in the Port Stephens Area and now welcomes boys and girls.

Mrs Lisa Conroy is a newly appointed group leader for 1st Medowie.

She told News Of The Area, “I became a leader because I could see the need to get Scouts out into the community of Medowie.”

“I have been in the background for the past ten years due to my husband’s and son’s involvement, so I decided to take on a leadership role.”

Mr Denis Conroy, District Scout Leader for Port Stephens, has been a leader for 15 years.

Mr Conroy has just recently been awarded the Silver Wattle.

This commendation is awarded for outstanding service to Scouts Australia as an adult member in an active leadership role, for a period of ten to twelve years.

Mr Conroy told News Of The Area, “For someone thinking about joining Scouts, it’s a great way to conquer your fears and to try new things while developing lifelong skills.”

Ms Jane Hogno, District Commissioner, will be presenting the Raymond Terrace MarketPlace PBL awards on 29 August.

Ms Hogno, District Commissioner for Port Stephens, has been a Scout for 25 years and was in Guides, the sister organisation of Scouts, for 19 years before that.

On the evening, Scouts will have a display to answer any questions the public has about Scouts.

At the display will be Mr Ralph Francis, Group Leader at 1st Tilligerry, who started as a cub 58 years ago.

The information stand at MarketPlace will be in place from 29 to 31 August.

Approximately 200 Scouts are registered in the Port Stephens district.

The district includes Clarence Town, Seaham, Raymond Terrace, Medowie, Tilligerry, Anna Bay, and Nelson Bay.

The scouting Mission as stated in their official information is: to contribute to the education of young people, through a value system based on the Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society.
