Amongst the celebrations, was a special mention of Mrs Joyce Wood who turned 99 on 16 November, 2017.

A World War I baby, Mrs Wood was born five days after the Armistice in November, 1918.

Mrs Wood, an affirmed Raymond Terrace local, lived all her married life in a house she built with her husband in 1940 near the Ki Ora homestead of her parents in law.

She only recently moved into a nursing home, but prior to that she lived independently at home.

The secret to her energetic longevity, Mrs Wood told News Of The Area, is, “I’ve never been one not to get involved and I’ve kept busy, you need to.”

“I’ve done meals on wheels, bowling, volunteered at the Church.”

“Don’t sit down!”

Family folklore has it that Mrs Wood’s name comes from a combination of the words Joy and Peace as she was born so soon after the end of World War I.

Mr Giacomo Arnott, Port Stephens Councillor and representing Mrs Meryl Swanson MP at the lunch, told News Of The Area, “Community events like this are important to recognise community members who put in the time, effort, hours, and energy in something.”

“It’s a massive honour for us to recognise the people who have made contributions to the community.”

President Mrs Kath Dooker and Secretary, Mrs Jill Sharkey spoke about the wonderful achievements of the Probus Club this year, including assisting to raise funds for life saving equipment at the John Hunter Hospital through their donations of craft items that were raffled.

In total, seven Probus members celebrated turning over 90, including: June Blanche (94), Beth Osborn (90), Ruth Nicholas (91), Dulcie Newman (91), Mavis McLean (92), Marg Chapman (99), and Joyce Wood (99).

Demonstrating the close knit community off Port Stephens, three of the birthday women, Beth, Marg, and Joyce all went to school together in Karuah.
