What many experienced quilters hope to achieve in a lifetime, Scarlett Lewis has already done so at the age of 7.

The Wirreanda Public School, Year 2 student has recently been awarded prizes in two separate quilt shows for the same quilt which was self-designed, I Love Sydney.

Asked what she likes about quilting, Scarlett told Medowie News Of The Area, “I like it because I can calm myself down, it gets me thinking; picking the fabric is my favourite part.”

The motivation for the design came in 2015, when Scarlett and her mother walked outside of a quilt competition and saw a beautiful rainbow over the Harbour Bridge; this became the design inspiration for the quilt submitted this year to both the Quilter’s Companion and Quilt NSW competitions.

For the first competition,Quilter’s Companion Scarlett came second in the Under 35 designer competition and among her prizes was a Brother sewing machine, fabric, a quilt pattern and a 12 month magazine subscription.

For her recent entry toQuilt NSW, which had a total of 390 entrants, Scarlett came first in the junior category and won $300 worth of fabric and a free valuation of the quilt.

The Quilt NSW show is the official show of the premier quilting association (formerly NSW Quilters’ Guild) and is held annually.

Scarlett told Medowie News Of The Area, “I first started sewing when I was five, that’s when I made my first quilt by myself.”

Her mother, an experienced and award winning quilter who teaches quilting classes added, “Scarlett usually comes down to my studio when I am preparing to teach and she asks ‘what are you teaching the ladies? you need to show me.’ So, when she is interested and keen she does some great sewing.”
