IT was a good turn up of bowlers on Tuesday 9 May.

The format for play was three games of Triples and a game of Fours.

Looking back on the card, the Fours match tells the story of a great comeback by Maynie Roberts’ team consisting of Bev Dunn, Karen Green and Lily Smith versus Jan Kuzmic, Jo Younghusband, Robyn Webster and Pat Baker.

Maynie’s team were down 5 v 17 at the 12th end.

With only six more ends to be played, Maynie’s side obviously bowled with “a never give in attitude”, more than tripling  their score in 6 ends.

The end result was a win to Pat’s team 18 v 16.

Bowls is an interesting game.

The winners for the day were Pam Gilchrist, Bev Rhodes and Wendy Brand with a win plus ends.

Thursday 11 May: Post Pennant lunch plus social bowls.

Prior to play, Julie Kennedy was wished a happy birthday for 9 May. Format for play was Triples.

The winners with the lowest margin were Pat Baker, Carol Hayden and Karen McPhie.

Before lunch the winners of the “at home competition” was announced.

Congratulations to Pat Baker for coming first, equal second Dorothy Thompson and Jill McBride and third place also a draw for Jan Kuzmic and Carol Hayden.

Dorothy kindly contributed her prize money to our annual Oncology Day.

On to lunch, a big thank you to the chefs George Winter and Greg Pearson for cooking the meat to perfection.

The Social Committee Wendy Jones, Francis Betar and Sheril Johnson, don’t know how we would manage without you guys.

Thanks to all those who made slices and those who helped out setting up, serving and cleaning.

Much appreciation to the members of the Men’s Bowling Club who assisted us during the Pennant Season either by driving the bus or umpiring games.

It was great to see you enjoying our day with us.

Just ending, unfortunately on a sad note. Following our game of bowls our club President Robyn Webster informed us that Merle Sargeant had passed away the previous night.

Merle transferred to Tea Gardens Women’s Bowling Club in May 2002.

Merle was an integral part of our club besides being a very good bowler.

Merle  bowled in the 2011 team that  won the Grade 2 Newcastle District Pennant Competition.

She held many positions on the committee, the last being treasurer which she resigned from in 2016.

Merle was always there giving encouragement and very sound bowling advice to all new players.

We will miss you dearly Merle. Gone but not forgotten.
