NSW SES Port Stephens were activated yesterday by the state operations centre for multiple storm related jobs in the Port Stephens area.
Over the course of the afternoon, Port Stephens crews responded to 28 jobs with the unit, fielding 20+ operators.
35.6mm of rain fell within a 30 minute period, causing significant damage to homes and localised flooding.
Many of the requests for assistance received were for flooding, ceiling collapse and water ingress.
All four of the unit’s vehicles were operational last night; Light Storm (PTS31), Light Rescue (PTS42), Medium Rescue (PTS45) and Heavy Rescue (PTS47).
NSW SES Port Stephens Unit Controller, David Douglas, told News Of The Area, “It was great to see all the members jump to action in order to get the jobs completed quickly and safely.”
“We haven’t had a huge demand for storm related jobs over the past year but it makes all the training worthwhile when we can help the community.”
David said, “The majority of our jobs were for leaking roofs and blocked drains and gutters. “
“Whilst we understand it’s not the most entertaining job for the weekend, cleaning down pipes, drains and gutters goes a long way in preventing damage to your house.”
