A number of Port Stephens based artists will have their work on display at d’Albora Marinas, Nelson Bay over the upcoming school holidays – as part of the Smart Arts cultural development program.

Run in partnership by Port Stephens Council, the Business Centre Newcastle and Octapod earlier this year, the program targeted individuals in the local creative industry to form networks and mentorships – as well as provide practical business skills to turn their passions into viable enterprises.

Council’s Coordinator of Community Development and Engagement, Penny Amberg said that the pop-up was an exciting extension of the Smart Arts program.

“The Smart Arts program has been a great initiative in bringing together our creative community, creating networks and contributing to the economic diversity of Port Stephens.

“With any creative pursuit, visibility is important in generating interest – we felt a pop-up location during the school holidays was a great opportunity to showcase the wealth of artistic talent in the region and build the capacity of our local artists,” she said.

A variety of artists will be taking part in the pop-up with photographers; glass, textile and mosaic artists and a ceramicist.

Sculptor and marine conservation champion, Matt Johnston from Atlantis Port Stephens will also be also be contributing to the shop with some of his artistic creations and interactive educational displays.

“Matt is a Smart Arts member and, like all of our artists has been a valued edition to the creative community we’ve fostered through the program.

“We’re excited to have such an array of artists together for the public to enjoy – everyone involved will also have works available for purchase,” said Ms Amberg.

Events and Sales Manager for d’Albora, Deborah Stretton said the marina was more than happy to provide a platform for local artists to display their work.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to assist local artists in getting their work out into the community.

“With a vacant shop front over the school holidays, it was a perfect fit to have them exhibit during what will be a busy period,” said Ms Stretton.

Ms Amberg said that the success of the Smart Arts program would see the continuation of additional projects such as the Nelson Bay pop-up.

“We’ll be continuing to explore new opportunities to promote our local artists collectively, with plans for more pop-up locations set for later this year,” she added.
