WHEN Agriculture Teacher Miss Tanya Henry left Irrawang High School a few months ago for a permanent position at Gosford High School, she requested that any monies raised for her staff farewell gift be given to Year 9 Medowie student Karly Page to attend the annual Live Cattle Assessment Course at Tocal Agricultural College.

The popular three-day course attended by around 65 participants including school students, was run by the Angus Breed Society and held last week.

The Beef Cattle Assessment Course is now in its 38th year.

It has been widely recognised as the most practical and hands-on beef cattle selection course of its kind in Australia as well as internationally.

The course embraces both the newcomer and the experienced alike.

The course itinerary consisted of a range of activities including lectures on meeting market specifications, bull selection, Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and how to use them, followed up with hands-on, practical assessment of cattle provided from Tocal and well-established cattle breeders in the local area.

The two days were jam-packed with a mix of theoretical and practical experiences.

Through participation in this course, Karly has made many new contacts in the industry, experienced living on-site at Tocal Agricultural College and gained opportunities to complete future work experience on working farms.

She also received a certificate to add to her resumé.

Karly is pictured with her certificate, along with Ms Henry, who also attended the course.

We are thankful to have teachers like Miss Henry willing to give any student the opportunity to excel in an area they are passionate about.
