Red Neds Gourmet Pies owner Barry Kelly is about to retire, at the age of 82, after serving Nelson Bay and beyond for the last 20 years.

The iconic pie shop is synonymous with Australia’s most infamous Bushranger Ned Kelly.

The lifesize statue of Ned Kelly out the front of the shop has become a favourite photographic opportunity for international tourists when they visit the Bay.

Barry Kelly, the master pie maker, came up with the name “Red Neds” after seeing the connection that was born from his own last name being Kelly, and a combination of Ned Kelly and Ned’s father’s name being “Red.”

Over the years the gourmet pie shop has proven extremely popular with locals and tourists alike and has gained a reputation as one of the best gourmet pie shops in Australia.

Barry Kelly learned his craft in the 5 star International Hotel the Park Plaza Hotel in Toronto Canada working firstly as a Food Cost Controller and later working alongside International executive Chef Fred Stahali from Switzerland.

Red Neds Pies has a range of more than 52 pies, from a variety of beef pies including Beef Stroganoff with Sour Cream to Smoked Chicken with Camembert cheese as well as an amazing variety of fruit pies.

Receiving more than 100 awards from Australia’s top baking competitions has given Mr Kelly the title of one of Australia’s leading pie makers.

Bay News Of The Area met Mr Kelly during last week’s heat wave to discuss what the next season would look like for Mr Kelly after he retires.

We found Mr Kelly in his kitchen, passionately making his next batch of amazing pies while everyone else was laying low, barely surviving in the 42 degree heat.

“One of the best parts of my job and something that I will miss most is hearing the compliments from people as they share with me that it’s the best pie they have ever tasted,” Mr Barry said.

“I am looking forward to training the new owner of Red Neds as I share my recipes for each of the gourmet pies I have created over the years,” he added.

On retirement, Mr Kelly plans to relax in his Anna Bay home with partner Margaret, reading books, some gardening and hopes to do a little travelling too.

“Life is as long as a piece of string and I am on the tail end of that string; it’s time to do some of the things I’ve always wanted to do,” Mr Kelly said.
