MYALL Coast primary students got a taste of high school life last week, at the Showcase Day held at Tea Gardens Public School.
The annual event is an initiative of the Myall Learning Community to help make the transition to high school a little easier for the students.
Bulahdelah Central School (BCS) teacher, Ms Georgina Cunich, said the day allowed the students to try out subjects they will be involved in during their secondary studies.
“It also provided an opportunity for the students from different schools to get to know one another, which helps reduce the anxiety about moving to high school,” she said.
Hands-on science experiments, unravelling the past in a history lesson and discovering the dramatics of the stage were some of the many learning experiences on offer.
A lunchtime concert presented by BCS music students was another highlight, which had the young primary children dancing to the beat.
Year 6 student, Charli Luxon, said her favourite subject of the day was sport.
“It was interactive so we got to mix with everyone from the other schools,” she said.
“It was also good to learn from the high school students, so we could get to know them as well.”
The practical activities in the Chinese language session appealed to BCS Year 6 student, Grace Kiehne.
“We learnt to count to 10 in Chinese and also made a traditional lantern,” she said.
“The best part was using chopsticks, it was hard, but lots of fun.”
The lessons were taught by specialist secondary teachers from BCS and highlighted some of the learning experiences the young students can look forward to.
Ms Cunich said it was also a great leadership opportunity for the BCS students who helped lead the lessons.
The Showcase Day is one of many transition activities held throughout the year.
