STUDENTS were given a taste test of an industry this week that they may not have encountered previously, hopefully sparking some interest and steering some students to a potential career interest area down the track.
Students from Years 7-12 at Irrawang High School were invited to attend a fascinating workshop this week on Forensic Science.
A presenter in the field visited the school, bringing with them a real-to-life crime scene investigation scenario, and set up a series of forensic evidence experiments for the students to work through together.
Students learned about the set up case scenario, and all contributing factors leading to the crime being committed.
School representative Lue Fagan told News Of The Area, “It was fascinating watching the students work through step by step what had happened.”
“The case highlighted how the lure of drugs and easy money can lead to a web of deceit and betrayal, and the students were thoroughly engaged as they investigated.”
“A young man is accused of the crime and all the evidence points to his guilt, but the students had to investigate if he was really the murderer,” she said.
Students then worked their way through the case while they learnt how chemistry, physics and biology can help to solve crimes.
They analysed the evidence provided to them, including arson, autopsy, DNA, and ballistics, before coming to a conclusion and providing an analysis of their findings.
Ms Fagan said, “A fascinating day was had by all, and a day that we will certainly host again at Irrawang high for future students to enjoy.”
