But did you know that the world wide organisation had its humble beginnings in France and to that end the Myall U3A has added French language lessons to its list of activities.

”At Myall U3A, most members have had a taste of the French language at school and as France is a very popular tourist destination for Australians, study of the language is a practical advantage for holidays, therefore, it is not surprising that enrolments for French in 2018 have been overwhelming. ” teacher George Nadal said.

George told News of The Area, “At Myall U3A, we have embraced ‘a mixed ability group.

“Group members have brought with them, not only school learning experience, but also a range of learning experiences from holidays to French speaking countries.”

“During the first term, members have had the opportunity to appreciate the four language skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing.”

“In term two, we will spend a considerable amount of time either listening or speaking to provide a sound foundation for confidence,” George said.

“If my memory serves me well, we all learn our first language by listening to our parents and adults and then imitating them.

With its headquarters in beautiful Hawks Nest, Myall U3A runs two French courses, a beginner’s course and an intermediate/advanced course once a week on Thursdays.

To end the first term, members of the French classes were treated to a very successful ‘Matinée des Bavards’,
a chit chat morning tea at the Tea Gardens Pub.

The order of the day, which was not on the menu, was to speak only French.
