June 20: One sometimes hears the question, how many men does it take to change a light globe? I suppose the answer is that depends, however, I do know how many people are involved in a Bowling Club fielding three Pennant sides.
About 70 people attended the Annual Pennant Bash at the Club.
Apart from the players and the reserves, those among the invited guests were officials, sponsors, umpires, bus drivers and our wonderful lady caterers who truly put other clubs to shame with their magnificent high teas.
All were feted and thanked this year at a wonderful dinner provided by Carolyn Bywater.
Kind of gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling knowing that you are part of something really special and the Tea Gardens Bowling Club, both the men’s and women’s, is indeed quite remarkable.
Let’s do it again next year!
June 21: Following the usual rain, and on a cloudy day, the normal Sunday Introduction to Bowls event was held with 16 keen bowlers participating. The winners on the day were; David Garcia, Bryan McPhie and David Williams. (Great to see David Garcia giving bowls a try).
The lucky losers were; Laurel Laver and Stewart Sturrock.
June 24: In calm and mild conditions 43 bowlers turned out for a game of non-nominated Triples. Play was divided between the sluggish grass green and the fast synthetic green. It was certainly difficult to adjust to the different surfaces however the team of; Geoff Page, Keith Charnock and Danny Johnson appeared to have no trouble running out winners on +35.
Runners-up on a score of +31 were; Kevin Barbie, John Moore and Ron Webster.
June 26: The rain came early this week, Thursday instead of Friday, so that the Friday Jackpot Pairs was played in mild and sunny weather for a change.
The winners today with the highest winning score of +21 were; Geoff (Golden Arm) Page and Kevin Mills.
Runners-up were Bill Heylbut, Bill Moon and Pip Sullivan, (playing a triples game).
The two Jackpots, one at $200.00 and the other at $80.00 were not won.
June 27 : There was one catch-up game in the Major Pairs with the two Bobs, Bob Foster and Bob Weir taking on Ron Green, (substituting for Barry Drayton), and Jeff Baker.
The two Bobs were off to a great start leading early by 12-3 at about the halfway mark but alas, their challenge stalled in the wake of some fine bowling by their opponents. They were only to add to more shots in the match, being passed on the 17th end and going down 21-14.
June 28: Two Major Singles games were played today. The match between Bob Weir and Richard Lee was a deferred game and the other a semi-final between John Bilby and Jeff Baker.
The first game was very entertaining with some fine bowls played by both players, however Richard proved too strong and eventually won 31-19.
In the other game Jeff Baker continued with his fine form of the previous day and ran away winning 31-8.
Next Saturday July 4, Round 1 of the Minor Pairs will commence along with the Final of the Major Pairs where Dennis Ashbridge and John Bilby take on Barry Drayton and Jeff Baker. Should be a very entertaining game!
On Sunday next July 5, Round 2 of the Minor Pairs will be played and the Semi-Finals of the Major singles between Richard Lee and Dennis Ashbridge. Cannot wait for this one!
