“It was a wonderful day filled with community spirit and celebrations,” organiser Brooke Feltis said.

As well as a morning tea, the group gave out around 140 Boomerang Bags to the community as part of its campaign to reduce plastic waste.

“More importantly, there were many conversations with community educating people around how small changes can make a big difference in terms of reducing reliance on singles use plastics such as plastic bags, bottles, straws, coffee cups etc.,” Brooke said.

Youngsters were also encouraged to keep the environment rubbish free.

“The girls (pictured) were given free bags after they went down to the beach and collected rubbish as part of our ‘Take 3 for the Sea’ initiative,” Brooke said.

“It was fantastic to see so many people take the time and energy to clean up our beach by picking up three pieces of rubbish and placing it into the bin.”

“We were delighted to gift these people a free bag for their efforts.”

“If everyone who visited our beach were to take part in simply taking three pieces of rubbish with them when they leave, the oceans would be significantly cleaner and healthier place for our marine life.”

Boomerang Bags Tea Gardens Hawks Nest have no plans on slowing down into its second year.

The group is holding another sewing bee on Saturday 5 May beginning at 9am in the Dolphin Room of the Tea Gardens Hotel.

Everyone is welcome and there are plenty of roles for those who don’t sew.

Brooke said, “Please pop in, share a cuppa and have a chat, we’d love your support.”
