A sea of red swept across Bulahdelah Central School last Friday in recognition of the Day for Daniel.
The annual day was developed by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation with the aim of educating children about their personal safety.
Organising Teacher Angie Vella said the school has taken part in the day for the past few years.
“It’s great to have kids in our community empowered by learning safety awareness,” Ms Vella said.
“Strategies relating to obeying rules, safety networks and respectful relationships were some of the areas covered to help the children feel safe and secure within their community.”
Senior Constable Ashley Ray from Bulahdelah Police was on hand to talk with the students about safety issues and the importance of safe behaviours.
Strategies for crossing the street safely, walking in pairs and groups and developing a network of people to talk to about concerns were also included in the program.
Ms Vella told News Of The Area the Foundation is getting bigger, stronger and better each year.
“More and more schools are organising a special day to celebrate the life of Daniel Morecambe,” she said.
“The more the message of child protection and child safety goes out to communities, the better it is.”
The Foundation was established by Bruce and Denise Morcombe in 2005 after their son Daniel was abducted and murdered in 2003 while waiting for a bus on the Sunshine Coast.
In addition to educating children on how to stay safe, the foundation also supports young victims of crime.
