THE Lions Club of Medowie this week hosted the Lions Club Youth of the Year for another year.

Jayden Maidstone from Tilligerry took out the top spot, and was named Lions Club Youth Of The Year.

Maddison Woodcock from Medowie was named as the runner up.

The Lions Club of Australia hosts the yearly competition to assist young people to improve their skills before entering the workforce or other endeavours.

A high level of academic, leadership, sporting, public speaking and citizenship achievement is sought in its winners.

By emphasising these qualities, it hopes to provide outstanding role models for the youth of Australia and an overall increase in the confidence of young men and women.

Entrants first participate in a private interview for 45 minutes, where they are assessed on leadership, sporting and/or cultural activities, citizenship and community involvement, academic, general knowledge and personality.

Entrants then participate in the public speaking section, where they are given two impromptu questions to speak on for two minutes, before speaking for five minutes on a pre-rehearsed topic of their own choice.

Jayden Maidstone has already served three years on the student representative council at Hunter River High School, is vice captain of the school and a captain for Tilligerry Club Sports.

Having a love of sport, Jayden is actively involved in soccer and cross country.

Jayden is involved with Thou Walla Family Centre, Sorry Day events and the McGrath Foundation,
Jayden is a high achiever at school, studying advanced maths and English, physics, music, design and technology, software development and Aviation Certificate III.

Maddison Woodcock is involved in Scouting and the Venturers’ Movement, where she holds positions of Scout Patrol Leader and Vice Chairman.

She has achieved the Australian Scout Medallion, and plays in the school hockey team.

Maddison is currently working towards the Queen’s Scout Award.

Maddison has been selected to write in the Blue Ribbon Writing project.

She is also involved in horse riding, archery and gymnastics, outside of her school studies.

At school, Maddison is studying agriculture, art, geography, history, English, science, maths (extension level) and PE, health and PBE.

She has also received a number of academic awards.

Peter Delphin and Alex Hall provided the musical entertainment during the interlude at the event.

Peter is a year 11 student from Hunter River High School and likes all aspects of music and performing.

Alex attends Irrawang High School and is an accomplished musician.

Congratulations to these four students for being fine representatives of the Medowie and Tilligerry area.
