Formally acknowledging their years of dedication, volunteers Mark Hartwell, Dave Morgan and Laurie Sumner were each presented with a 10-year Service Medal at a ceremony recently held at Tuncurry.

At 86 years young, Laurie is one of the Brigade’s most active members and has attended 93 percent of all callouts since he started volunteering 11 years ago.

“I’m the oldest member of the brigade and I’ll continue volunteering until I can’t climb into the truck anymore,” he said.
“The brigade is one big family and we all volunteer because we enjoy it.”

Deb Gilbert, who has been volunteering with the RFS for 13 years, starting at Bulahdelah and now serving as Deputy Captain of the Coolongolook Brigade, was also honoured with a 10-year Service Medal.

The awards were presented by NSW RFS Assistant Commissioner Stuart Midgley and Myall Lakes MP Stephen Bromhead.

Mr Bromhead said the local brigade members were amongst 73 RFS volunteers from the MidCoast region who were recognised at the ceremony for their ongoing service.

“The dedication and experience of each and every one of these volunteers is priceless,” Mr Bromhead said.

“Their hard work and professionalism does not go unnoticed and this is a welcome opportunity for the community to express their gratitude and say thank you.”

Mr Bromhead said the 73 medal recipients have accumulated an impressive 1,513 years of service between them.
