Classmate Katerina Poniris, who also achieved well above the required standard, said she was “very surprised” when she received her results. “I am so glad that I made it,” she said. “I didn’t think I did very well, I was very nervous going into the tests.” This year’s NAPLAN data reveals only 32 per cent of NSW students attained a band eight or above in all three tests, meaning they have already qualified for their HSC. But for around 61,000 NSW Year 9 students, an extra test in at least one of the three areas will need to be taken to meet the minimum requirements and be eligible. BCS Relieving Principal, Mrs Deb Gilbert, said students can re-sit the test in Year 10, 11 and 12, or up to five years after starting a HSC course, to get that achievement. “Students can still get a Record of School Achievement for Years 10 and 11 and a Statement of Attainment for Year 12 and for finishing Stage 6,” she said. “They can still attain an ATAR for University Admission, but if they want the actual credential of a HSC, then they need to have met the minimum band eight requirements.” Mrs Gilbert said there are many extra supports in place to assist students meet the standards. This is the first year of the state government’s new minimum literacy and numeracy requirements which were introduced to improve educational standards.
