Port Stephens Council has released its Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

Emily Graham, Council’s Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator said, “The Disability Inclusion Action Plan outlines Council’s commitment to support the right of choice for people with a disability to live their lives with access to the same opportunities as all residents.”

She believes that council is working hard to ensure that residents and visitors to Port Stephens have access to facilities and services as well as social inclusion.

“Everyone has the right to enjoy the benefits of living and working in Port Stephens.”

The plan is designed to achieve positive change and create a more inclusive society, no matter what the individual’s background or abilities are.

“Becoming a more socially inclusive, accessible and liveable place will benefit everyone in Port Stephens, particularly the more vulnerable people in our society such as young children or our ageing population,” she said.

Di Lambert, who uses a mobility scooter in the Bay, told News Of The Area, “The Nelson Bay town centre is accessible, however near St Michael’s Primary School, the footpaths are not suitable for mobility scooters.”

She believes that town is quite accessible with the new Woolworths and entry to the Seabreeze Hotel being very accessible.

“I find that there is a general courtesy towards older people here in the Bay,” she said.
