WINTER is coming, and the Red Cross Tea Gardens group is calling for some warm-heartedness this season.

After proudly marching on ANZAC Day, the Red Cross ladies have been working hard on the latest appeal to combat rising homelessness in and around Newcastle.

“With the change in temperature, we’ve had a call for blankets for single-size beds, beanies, gloves, socks and scarves for the homeless and people living in their cars,” Janet Baker, Publicity Officer for Tea Gardens Red Cross told News Of The Area.

“Unfortunately, the numbers of people living in their cars have risen, and stocks of warm-weather clothing are low at the moment.”

Exorbitant rents, coupled with widespread precarious employment have pushed the homelessness upsurge.

“Imagine trying to get an affordable rental, and 80 other people turn up – when you are living payday to payday, it doesn’t take much to end up sleeping in cars or on the streets,” Ms Baker explained.

Donations can be made at No.6 Settlers Way, Tea Gardens, whence a good friend of the Red Cross will take them to where they are needed in Newcastle.

The Red Cross ladies recently held a Mothers’ Day raffle near Coles Tea Gardens, the proceeds of which exceeded $1000, and will go to local needs.

“New members are always welcome, anyone interested in specialised Red Cross training can contact Joanne Pierce on 0474 222 214 or come along and see and have a chat,” Ms Baker told NOTA.

The organisation’s Tea Gardens-based training day, soon to be announced, is necessary for those entering the Emergency Service, Recovery or Calling sectors of the Red Cross, which typically requires psychological training, Working with Children and Police Checks.

The local Red Cross meets at the Country Club on the fourth Monday of the month, which in May immediately precedes the ‘Biggest Morning Tea’, run by the Wednesday Morning Craft Group, and will feature most of the community service groups in town.
