The Bulahdelah Central School community came together to honour the memory of 2011 school captain Matt Smith at a memorial concert recently held at the school.
More than 40 students belted out the latest hits and a couple of golden oldies whilst others pumped out rock and dramatic monologues in recognition of Matt’s passion for music and drama.
Staff also entertained the large crowd with maths teacher Walter Prowse and scientist Tim Cooper stealing the show with their virtuosic solos in ‘Sweet Home Chicago.’
The rapturous applause, cheering and spontaneous dancing ensured a memorable end to the year.
Former student and one of Matt’s classmates, Rhiannon Campbell from Hawks Nest, presented impressive vocal solos which highlighted her crystal-clear voice.
Rhiannon said she always looks forward to performing in the concert.
“Matt was a huge part of my school life and had a big influence on my music as well,” she said.
“I performed in the first Matt Smith Concert five years ago, and I’ve been back every year since.”
For many of the young musicians, any signs of nervousness were quickly replaced with excitement and pride as they shared their music with the audience.
A visit from Santa, the talent of the performers and the enthusiasm of the audience were some of the many highlights during the afternoon.
Matt’s parents Kim and Ken Smith told News Of The Area they were proud to see so many students participate in the concert.
“There was so much energy, so much love and so much laughter which is Matt all over,” Kim said.
“The concert was all about friends having fun and embodied the legacy that Matt left.”
The afternoon celebrated the achievements and talents of the former BCS captain whose life was tragically taken in 2011.
