After a childhood spent exploring Royal National Park Simone has a passion for the natural environment.

A few years ago she saw an advertisement, seeking volunteers for Port Stephens Koalas and realised that the local carers lived very close to where she lived, so she applied.

These days it’s not often that Simone doesn’t have a koala at her home in desperate need of care.

Once Simone started caring for koalas she was hooked.

Simone Aurino told News Of The Area, “It isn’t easy, sometimes we work with an animal for months only to have the euthanize it.”

She believes that the way Port Stephens Koalas work as a team to determine the best care for each koala is one of the reasons they have so much success.

The volunteers all train on the job and it never ceases to amaze as to how much you can learn from other interested and dedicated people.

“We all have different experiences, which creates a collective experience.”

Simone’s family is involved in her koala caring with her husband and children having helped at rescues.

It’s hard to do especially when not all the koalas survive, but it has become my passion,” she said.

The new Port Stephens Koala Sanctuary will assist Simone and the crew at Port Stephens Koalas create better outcomes for sick and injured Port Stephens Koalas.
